| Bucannan's Rangers (aka the 'Dogbreath' Dragoons) | |||
|
Background Notes & Unit History Originally formed as a volunteer unit in the 2nd Canadian civil war, raised and financed by banker ‘Colonel’ Duncan McFarlane Bucannan and led by his son ‘Major’ Ian Bucannan. Served with distinction and re-formed after the war as a mercenary company, mostly in NAC pay. The unit retains its name out of tradition but no longer has any connections to the Bucannan family or any particular allegiance to the NAC, or any other faction or power. Commercial interest is paramount and the personnel expect their chosen commander to be as good a businessman as a leader in battle. Their nickname comes from their rather lax attitude to personal hygiene (perhaps recruited from wargamers) and their less than polished appearance. Equipment is always kept in excellent working order but ‘uniforms’ and other personal kit are of little consequence to the men. The ‘standard’ uniform is a bluish grey (any shade, any shape) mostly because it is easy to acquire and doesn’t show dirt & beer stains. This is not a unit that goes in for ‘Parade Ground Chic’ – dirt and mud are considered camouflage and grey vehicles are that colour ‘cos that’s how they were delivered. They can afford paint but just can’t be bothered using it. The motto attributed to this unit (by others they have served alongside) is “ Smell ? What smell ? ” The unit has a fearsome reputation and a service record of almost continuous success. They specialise in anti-bandit missions, particularly where the ‘bandits’ are ex-regulars or conscripts gone native, mercenaries being preferred for this kind of mission as there is less chance that they will ‘go native’ themselves. Recent successful missions have not only enhanced the war chest with extra payment but also with loot from a particularly well equipped pirate ‘nest’ they destroyed recently. This means that, for the first time in their history, they have decent vehicles that are relatively new and of recent design.
